Bullying and Harrassment

In the health and social care sector, every employee deserves to work in an environment of respect, dignity, and safety. Sadly, instances of workplace bullying and harassment do occur – and in care homes, the impact can be particularly damaging.
Not only does it harm staff wellbeing and morale, but it can also undermine the quality of care delivered to residents. When team members feel unsafe or unsupported, the ripple effect reaches those who depend on us most.
It’s important to remember that bullying and harassment in the workplace breach Care Quality Commission (CQC) requirements for Safe, Caring, and Well-led services. A culture that tolerates such behaviour can result in:
· Poor CQC inspection outcomes.
· Regulatory enforcement action.
· Damage to the provider’s reputation and staff retention
Leaders and managers in care settings have a duty to:
· Recognise early signs of bullying and harassment.
· Create clear policies and zero-tolerance cultures.
· Support victims promptly and fairly.
· Provide training on respectful communication and conflict resolution.
A strong, supportive workplace culture is not just about compliance – it’s about compassion, integrity, and the values that brought us into care in the first place.
