"We need to talk…”
Just hearing those words can put anyone on edge—especially in a high-pressure care environment where emotions often run high. But difficult conversations don’t have to be damaging. In fact, handled well, they can build trust, improve performance, and reduce tension in your team.
Here are 3 key tips to help you handle tough conversations with confidence:
🔹 Prepare, don’t wing it
Think about the outcome you want, write down key points, and be clear on your boundaries. Avoid going in emotionally charged.
🔹 Be specific, not personal
Say: “I noticed the medication log wasn’t completed on Tuesday” instead of “You’re careless with records.”
🔹 Listen to understand
Sometimes what looks like ‘underperformance’ is actually burnout, confusion, or a lack of support.
These conversations are never easy—but they’re easier with tools, structure, and practice.
If you or your team would benefit from support with things like this our online courses are designed to help. Specifically for health & social care leaders and frontline staff, delivered in small, relaxed Zoom sessions with no more than six participants.
